Kohler K582 Charging System

Picked up a used Kohler K582 out of a Bobcat 540. Going to transplant it into a Bobcat 520. Engine has 4 wires coming from under the flywheel (2 black & 2 red) indicating a 30 amp charge system. Engine did not include the OEM externally mounted rectifier/regulator. The 30 amp system was phased out and parts are nearly impossible to find or extremely expensive.

I have a 15 amp stator (2 wire) from an 18 hp single cylinder K series. Would it fit the K582? If so, I could get a 15 amp rectifier/regulator which is cheaper and readily available. Are the 15 amp and 30 amp flywheels the same?

Otherwise, anyone have any suggestions on where to find a 30 amp rect/reg or know of an alternate I could use? There isn"t enough room to add an auto type alternator.

I am reasonably sure that stator swap can"t be don.

Here"s a link to a couple of threads on the subject, one has a link to some motorcycle places that apparently have some solutions.

Thanks for the links Bob!

I found a used flywheel with the idea of converting back to a 15 amp system. Turns out, my parts guy also had a used 30 amp regulator. I ended up buying both. I will run the 30 amp...if it fails I'll make the switch to 15 amp. The 15 amp stators and regulators are readily available, new and used. I figured the flywheel would be the difficult piece to find down the road, so I bought it now. The price was reasonable so I don't mind it sitting on the shelf if/until needed.

I plan to look into the motorcycle regulators also. I pass a motorcycle salvage frequently and might have to stop and see what they have.
