have an older craftsman 14.5 hp mower with 6 speed transaxle model d4360-140. it is getting very hard to shift . time for over haul? replace transaxle ? or other solutions . thanks bill

The most common cause of problem you have on this mod transaxle is worn clutch keys(shift keys) and needle/sleeve bearings.Your transaxle was made by dana which is now owned by spicer.

The first thing you have to do is remove transaxle & open up & try to determine what's worn/broken then price out parts & decide if you want to spend money/time on repairing trans as it may be a drawn out affair & not a quick fix.

Click on link below after you have determined parts needed, click on spicer at home pg,look at assembly drawing/parts list for foote 4360-140 trans then lookup pn's/price out parts,it might get a little expensive, you'll have to decide the time/money issue.

Other options, check ebay for a new/used transaxle, google lawnmower graveyards & make some calls or consider a used/new replacement lawn tractor.

Joe is probably right. But one thing I would check is for rust/corrosion on the shifter rod where it goes in the transmission. The shifter rod sometimes rusts up and doesn"t want to turn or slide where it goes into the transmission case.

You still may have to take it apart to clean the rust up.
