I have a JD 265 from 1994. The past couple of weeks I"ve noticed that there is a strange thing going on with the pto. It seems to be on all the time. No matter what attachment I have on, the blades are always turning regardless of whether the pto switch is on or not. I tried to see if there was anything obviously wrong and when I tried to turn the pto pulley under the tractor by hand I noticed that it extremely stiff and almost not moveable. It"s as if it is locked in the "on" position. Should it be able to turn freely? Is it possibly jammed?

There is a bearing that turns when the PTO is NOT engaged. The bearing is going bad. The bearing is crimped in and is not listed separatly buy John Deere. I have removed the bearing and replaced it. If your tractor is 20 years old, you may want to replace the whole clutch.

I had a feeling it was something like that. That makes a lot of sense. I think the clutch was replaced a few years ago and it's not the original, but like anything I guess these things can break down at any time. Thanks for your help.
