Case 646 Compact Wheel Loader ( What type fluid? )

I been working on(restoring) a 1972 Case 646 an getting close on finishing it up. When I drained oil in the tank it look like regular type transmission fluid. Was red in color some what.
thought I"d ask when seeing the other questions ask on what type fluid to use.
Now would this unit use the 20W-50 oil as well?
or does it take a different type oil being it has a loader attachment.

Mike,
ALL Colt, Case and Ingersoll garden tractors, including the 600, 6000 and 7000 Series loader and loader/backhoe models use the exact same oil.

I prefer 20W50 MOTOR OIL because the factory recommended 20W40 is nearly impossible to find and when you do find it, you are paying a premium price for it. An alternative to the 20W50 is 15W40, which is a grade that is very easy to obtain. Shell Rotella or Chevron Delo are excellent choices.

You can also use this oil in the trans-axle.

In order to get your tractor to perform properly, you are going to have to remove the hoses from each hydraulic cylinder and disconnect the cylinder rod from the loader so that you can pull that rod all the way out and then push it all the way in to force out all of the oil.

This procedure must include the mid-lift cylinder and the 3 point hitch cylinder. Just refilling the reservoir alone will leave 50 percent of the WRONG oil in the tractor and you would have to drain and refill the tractor about 10 times in order to reduce the percentage of incorrect oil to the same level as you will achieve by manually draining all of the cylinders NOW.

The oil in these tractors is the same as the driveshaft in a car. It is the final link that transmits engine HP to the rear end and subsequently to the back tires. The irony here with the oil is that it is NOT about the performance of the loader because the loader cylinders do not care all that much about which oil is used. Many loaders specify ATF, which is only about 5 weight when compared to other motor oils. It is the drive motor on these tractors that demand a motor oil that is at least equal to straight 30 weight when at operating temperature.

True hydraulic oils do not use the same viscosity table as what motor oils use. These tractors are just one of many, many machines that specify motor oil for the hydraulic system.

You will be doing yourself and your tractor a major service by removing as much of the oil oil as possible but there is no need to get crazy over trying to get out the last quart of oil from the hydraulic lines, oil cooler and so forth. Any remaining oil will mix with the new oil for now and when you drain/refill the reservoir 2 years from now, the percentage will be reduced even more.

Thanks Tom for your help! I"ll probably be poping in an out on asking questions on the 646.
it"s all new to me as it was in a bushel basket when I picked it up. So far it"s been Slow going for me on where what parts go where putting it back together.
So far I been fairly lucky on get parts for it. I also had to get back with the previous owner to get more parts he had tucked away for years.

I"m still trying to find some 27 x 8.50 x 15 rear ag tires for it. Finding out that kind of of tire been obsulete and go to a skid steer style tire. Even them are hard to find in a 4 ply tire. Everything is 6 ply an up.

I just resently got the 3pt lift cylinder from the owner. It needed to be rebuilt. Found seal kit for it. I have about 80% of it painted and the parts.
Have"nt gotting into the desert sand colored part of it yet the hood, fenders and skurting.
I do need to check the loader lift cylinders yet for bad seals ect.
I"ve ordered some hydraulic hoses as some of the one on it was dry rotted and badly rusted tubing.
Machine must of set for a few years in one spot outdoors, tires was cracked and dry rotted too.

Sometime I"ll take some pictures and post it of what I got done so far. I"m retired and have been for 13 years now. Had Open heart surgery back in 2001 and left me with 35% of my heart left. But I been picking away at it as I refuss to sitting around and do nothing!!!
Just I don"t do things as fast as I use too!

Anyways Tom thanks again for your help! I"ll probably have more questions to ask before it"s all done.
Mike

The correct paint for your tractor is Federal Yellow or Industrial Yellow. Two names - same colour. The other colour is Power Red. Both are available from most Case/IH dealers but if you have a problem...just ask me and I will put you in touch with a dealer that will ship to you.

I advise you to add a hardener to the paint when shooting it.

Unfortunately, skid steer rubber is about the only option left these days and six ply is the lightest carcass made.
