Briggs 23 Good news

I finally have spark.
kind of crazy.
I was ready to put an external coil on it and had an old JD 6.volt.
But before I did this I put a battery on the tractor just to make sure the starter was 6 volt and to check polarity of the ground.
After some fiddling I finally got the starter to turn over the crank shaft. I still had the plug out and up on the head and as I was cranking it with the starter I noticed I had spark. WALLA!
So I guess this tells me that after all my frustration it was a matter of not turning the crank fast enough.
So now I'm on to the next step of getting the gas train cleanup and hopefully she'll take off.
Thanks again for your help.

Glad to hear you got your fire back.As far as fuel system your eng probably has a small or large 2 piece flo-jet carb,if you plan on cleaning/rebuilding carb before removing bolts & seperating top of carb from bowl, thread the packing nut for hi-speed needle off nipple on side of bowl, remove hi-speed needle completely from carb along brass tube needle rides in before removing screws & seperating carb half's otherwise you will damage needle/tube assembly(been there, done it)click on link below to see cutaway view of carb.
