Further to a previous post, I have determined that the slop in the steering is in the gearbox and my question is, can this be improved by loosening the jam nut on the pin and turning the pin in or alternately just turn the pin 90 degrees. I havent been in one of these for awhile and cant remember exactly what would happen. I have this Deere hanging verticaly like a gutted deer so I can see and work on it pretty easy.

Yes, it is threaded. It may be worn unevenly enough that adjusting it by turning is not feasible. You can replace it since the pin is not that expensive as these things go. It's hardened so turning it down on a lathe is not that easy.

You would also want to check the bolt on the back side of the box that holds the flat plate up against the box.

John Deere dealer is the best place to buy the pin and the new gasket. The bearings are probably ok, and everything else adjusts. There is an adjustment for the bearings in the end of the box that takes a really big screwdriver. There is a thread on overhauling the steering box on the weekendfreedommachines website, on the cub cadet website and on Brian Miller's garden tractor pulling website.
