I have a 1988 Wheelhorse 208-4 at my cabin with a
36" side discharge deck, It needs blades, but I do
not know what size, I can not find anything online
that shows me what blades to order. Anyone here
have one that can tell me what blades to order?

thanks,

Leo

What you need is mod# of deck,my lookup for mower deck/blade kit pn shows no 36" sd decks listed for 88 although it does show two 36" rear discharge decks & three 37" sd decks and two 36" sd deck for previous yr(87)the 37" sd decks used between 85-90 all used the same pn blade kit the two 36" decks(87)used a different pn blade kit as did the 36" rear discharge decks for 88,once you have mod# of deck you can take to local toro dealer & have him order or you can lookup in the toro mower deck listings at partstree online.

You have to consider that your mod tractor was made only in 88,wh offered mower decks 30"-60" depending on tractor mod# in addition time was when you went to a wh dealer you just bought the basic tractor, mower deck & other attachments were considered accessories,in the case of the mower deck, you could choose several different size/style decks that fit tractor for that mod yr,as deck was extra cost item above basic tractor price & additional extra cost "finishing kit" was also usually needed to attach/drive mower deck, the exception would be if you bought a display tractor off dealer floor deck would be whatever wh chose to install on tractor at factory, this is why you need mod# of deck as deck may be from previous yr(87)if a sd 36".

So with all that I will have to cut the grass at least one more time with the existing blades as the mower is 200 miles plus away and I have no idea what model deck and the tag is likely no longer on it. I can tell this is going to be a major pain.

Thanks.

This something you should have had the foresight to start dealing with the the last time you used the mower in fall of last yr rather than mid july of this yr as you have found out not all wh mower decks are created equal.

If there is no mod# tag on deck & you don't have the orig paper work for tractor/deck the smart money is now on mowing grass & removing one blade from deck after useing & bring home with you, measure length of blade & diam of center hole, then goto www.agrisupply.com & search mower blade, from list of mfg select wheel horse, then look at different length of blades listed,if you find a blade listed your size click on blade,in description of blade it will give oem pn for blade which you can take to a toro dealer & buy/order,if this is a 36"-37" 3 blade deck blade will probably be about 12 1/8".

I work for a Toro dealer. Toro bought Wheel Horse and a lot of WH info has been lost over the years. (Last episode for me was trying to find bearings for a 38" deck with no model number.)

Your best bet is to measure a blade,(length, width, center hole diameter) or better yet, take one with you to a dealer. Lots of the WH blades are in the Aftermarket parts book, with dimensional data to match yours up.

I was going to suggest your method when I first read the post, but it seemed too obvious.
There has to be an old time hardware store or small engine shop within spittin distance of the cabin. Just take 1 blade to the store & ask for 3 like this, only sharper & not worn out. Should be able to find a set in a few minutes.

The only thing I do know for sure it only has two blades. Will have to try to remove the deck and bring it home next trip up.

Usually only have to cut that lawn a few times a year have already cut it 6 times this year.

You need the model number of your mower in order to get the correct blades. I just called the WH dealer in our area. Hal

You can remove deck if you want to & go thru all that work, simplest way to remove blade(s) is drive tractor up on a set of auto ramps & lay on ground, grab blade with one hand & loosen blade nut with a socket wrench in other hand or raise deck as high as it will go & put a jack under steering cross member & jack up front end so you reach under deck,in both case's leave tractor in gear & chock rear wheels,I've been doing this way for yrs with my wh tractors.

Was at my cabin this weekend, tried to get the model numbers from the deck, can not read anything on that tag. So I removed the deck, and went to 3 different hardware stores close, no one had anything that would fit. I took one of the blades home and measured them, have blades coming they are 18 3/4" x 2" with a 3/4" bolt hole. Likely this will be the last set I ever have to put on that mower, normally only have to mow 4 times a year up there.
