My cub cadet 109 has quit charging. It starts good and the gage shows a slight discharge. I replaced the voltage reg. and polarized it per instructions but the gage still doesn"t show charge. Tried to check voltage with a cheap digital meter but it was all over the place. How do I check to see if the generator is putting out? Thanks...Fred

Thanks for the replies. I will try your suggestions tonight. The voltage reg. is after market but is the same one I put on my 149 and it works good. Thanks again....Fred

A couple of things.

(A) When you replaced the V/R, did you replace with a CC part or aftermarket..??

(B) Is the V/R properly grounded..??

(C) Go to this link for the correct Wiring Diagram.... Diagram

Check the wiring between the regulator and generator, and from the amp meter and the battery terminal on the regulator.

Don't think you have a generator problem. If it will start, it should charge.

Your starter/generator may need new brushes if it has a lot of hours on it. I have a Delco S/G on my Wards tractor I bought new in 1971. I never had a charging problem, but it was a little noisy when running. I had new bearings and brushes installed at a local shop about 3 years ago. Nice and quiet now. Hal
PS: I have a cheap meter from Radio Shack no problems reading charging voltage across a battery.

Check the battery voltage with the engine off. Then, check the battery voltage with the engine running. If the reading is higher with the engine running, it"s charging..........

Briefly ground the field terminal, if the gen is ok it will full charge. Listen for additional load on the motor when you ground it. This is a good indicator it's charging even if your gauge is inop or non existent. Just do this for a few seconds since there is no regulation of the current during the ground mode. If it charges, it's your wiring/regulator
