JD 100 lawn tractor problem

Tractor starts miss firing after about an hours
use. Will run somewhat with choke partially
engaged. Turn it off and let it sit for awhile and
will run again for a limited time before it does it
again. Unit has about 300 hours on it. Any ideas
what the problem is? Thanks.

I would start simple first, a new set of plugs just to say you changed them. BTDT, they can do some strange things...

Then look at the fuel system. Filter, hose condition, pump, tank vent, etc.

Then move on the the electrical. Best time to diagnose is when the problem is present. Be ready to do the testing immediately when it fails.

If there is a fuel solenoid on the carb, be sure it is getting a good connection.

Have a spark tester ready (make one from an old plug with the electrode removed). Test the spark at each plug. Could be a coil heating up and failing, especially if it only looses one cylinder.

Check the fuel flow from the tank to the carburetor by disconnecting the gas line. If there's just a trickle of gas you have blockage
either in the fuel tank, gas line or filter. If the flow looks ok open the main jet adjusting screw if it has one on the carburetor. Hal

If this is a 2000/newer 100 series tractor with a briggs ohv eng you might also want to check valve clearances when eng cold as same may on the edge of max clearance spec, then when eng gets hot clearance becomes excessive & valve(s) don't open all the way and eng goes lean/starved for gas,you may need service/repair for your mod# eng for instructions as to how to set clearance & spec for clearance on each valve. The reason I said 2000/newer is jd also had 100 series tractor between 75-78 with an 8hp briggs L head(flathead)eng.

I had this exact problem with a Farmall Cub tractor. Turned out to be the fuel filter screen going into the carburator. It was nearly stopped up. When the fuel burned out of the carb it would spit, miss, and die. After a while it would crank and run again then repeat the same thing.
