I got this J.D. GT235 Lawn tractor, The problem I got is, when I start the engine, the batt. light comes on, after running for a while, it'll go off. Measured dc. volts @ battery, got 12.8 or so NOT RUNNING.Start engine, light comes on, I measure 18 VDC. @ the battery. Then light go's off about 5 min. latter. Measured DC Volts @ 14.PTO has no effect on the DC Volts. Ideas where to look first?

No need to look beyond the voltage regulator. It's the device that converts the 33.8 +/- volts DC from the stator to the 13.5 */- volts DC for the battery.

Lots of these tractors have burned paint and rust from battery acid boiling over due to overcharging.

You should have a flywheel alternator that probably has a rectifier/regulator for converting
AC volts to DC. That rectifier is probably defective. Hal
PS:JD should have a wiring diagram for that tractor.

Measure with a good digital meter when the engine is about mowing speed. The regulator is a little metal box thingy about 2 inches square and 1/2 inch thick. Will be two white or yellow wires. Should show 28 volts AC. When you switch your meter to DC , measure the single wire "some times red", and the other meter lead to ground. It should go no higher than 14.2 volts. If you are any higher than that you are cooking your battery. Many good old mower repair shops will have use regulators that can be had for around $20.oo. good luck Jeffcat
