I picked this up a few days ago from a guy that was in over his head and frustrated, (meaning he basically gave it away). New battery, new ignition coil, new fuses. will not turn over, all i hear is a click at the starter cycloid when i turn the key. ...am I looking at a bad starter? Any help would be great!

Can you turn the engine over by hand? If it turns by hand, get the starter checked out. If it doesn't turn by hand and is seized, a starter off a D9 wouldn't turn it over either.

Remove the sparkplug and see if the engine can be turned by hand as suggested. If the engine isn't stuck some of those garden tractors have a starter solenoid that needs to be grounded during a start. You can run a hot wire directly from the battery to the starter. I would just touch it to see if the engine will crank.

My Wards tractor made by Gilson has a Delco Remy starter/generator used for starting the engine. For a long time I had to depress a pedal to ground the solenoid. It doesn't require that pedal to be depressed now. Hal

Engine will turn by hand so it isn't lost. I did try a hot wire from the battery straight to the starter and got nothing, not even a spark. I guess I need to get the starter checked out.

I do believe its the starter, i just took it off and used my battery charger/jumper and got it to make a little noise after messing with it a few moments.

yup, positive brushes are worn thru past the wire, i'm surprised i even got a noise out of it. Sooooooo....next question, where do i go for antique parts?

I would take it to a starter/alternator/generator shop, let them either look at repairing it or replace it. They sometimes have connections that will get a better price than a dealer or lawn mower shop.

Other alternative would be Ebay, but you're taking a chance on the condition.

Get the mod & spec# off eng then click on link below, click on kohler eng listings, search K341,find your spec# in K341 listings, write down pn for starter, goto ebay & search kohler+pn,you'll probably find many new oem/aftermarket starters listed, probably cheaper/quicker than having old starter repaired/rebuilt.

Success! Stopped at a local starter rebuild shop and he had the brush set and springs in stock. Took my treasures home and in 5 minutes had the starter rebuilt, tractor started up 2nd turn over! I just bet now the previous owner asked more that $50 for the Jacobsen!
