Out of curiosity

There are some city folks on the other side of the section "living country style". They didn't want to pay the money for a Gator or atv so they bought an EZ Go cart with a bed on the back and atv tires. Well, it was a heap. They have literally put thousands into it. They just had the engine completely rebuilt.

The guy keeps telling them to drive it and that the rings need to seat - it's smoking and stinks like crazy. Are these like other 4 cycle engines? How long does it take to seat? They have run it nearly every day for about three months. They were asking me about it. I have no clue - that's why I don't have one on the farm!

I am not familiar with the vehicle you speak of, sounds like it may be a golf cart. But, no matter, if an engine is rebuilt, and done properly, the rings should seat in just a few hours of run time and it should not smoke. Sounds like a bad OH to me.

While a 2 stroke engine can be set to run in either direction, you cannot instantly change the direction of rotation while the engine is running.

(quoted from post at 10:05:40 06/16/14) I may be old school but I thought those engines were 2 stroke and run backwards for reverse.
20 yrs ago there were some 2 stroke models and yes some not all reverse the engine for reverse. Most newer 1995 and up use Kawasaki or Subaru Robin or Yamaha all are either 4 stroke or electric now, and a properly OH engine would have seated the rings by now probably did get the oil control ring(s) in right.

Did the "guy" check the compression or timing before giving his diagnosis. Sounds like he is sick of working on it.
Back in the 1960s, I saw a distric manager for a major farm machinery take the intake manifold off and blow graphite in the intake valves of the head.
Not sure how that idea would work. Must not be that good, never hear of anyone doing it today.

Remember the old Mercury outboards that were made that way?

I knew somebody that had one, had a reversing starter with 2 gears, duck bill valves for the water pump... Theory was to go from forward to reverse, bring the throttle back to neutral, which was really just "stop", then pull it on back to reverse. It was supposed to reverse the starter and run the engine backward!

In reality, get ready to hit the dock!

What could they have possibly been thinking!!!

I don't know if EZ Go used the GY6 engines in their carts, a lot of the cheap ones did. Most of the GY6s were used in scooters. I understand that originally it was a Honda invention but the Chinese knocked it off and has sold millions of them in scooters and small vehicles. If it is, it will probably never run right, although mine doesn't smoke. It's an oil cooled (that's right, oil that circulates through a tiny radiator) 4 cycle with electronic ignition. The carb is a bear to keep adjusted. My Yerf Dog CUV is down with a transmission problem now.
