Governor lever

In an earlier msg. I mentioned the throttle link was too long and would bind.

Have found the governor control lever on a B & S series 300420 horizontal engine has slipped/moved from its proper setting. Do not know how to properly change the position. Have tried to change, the link now fits but the throttle stop will not fall back to idle position and the engine runs too fast.

Would appreciate any help, thanks, Fred

This is a little hard to explain, but here goes...

Remember, the throttle plate is linked directly to the gov arm. The gov spring is linked to the speed control lever. The tighter the spring, the higher the RPM.

Think about the function of the governor: The governor spring pulls the throttle open, the governor spool (inside the crankcase) wants to push the throttle closed when the RPM come up.

With the throttle plate in the open position, linkage connected, rotate the gov shaft until it stops against the gov spool, lock it down. Now, if you can easily push the throttle to idle, it's adjusted properly. If the throttle won't move to idle, the gov shaft is rotated the wrong way. Loosen it and turn it the other way as far as it will go, tighten it up. The throttle plate should now easily be moved to idle.

With the speed control lever in fast, the throttle plate should go wide open (engine off). With the speed control at slow, the throttle plate should either go closed or be very easy to push closed.

Hope this helps.
