1978 JD 210 Surges

Howdy all,

I have a recently acquired 1978 JD 210. It is in awesome shape! It was restored by a person who worked at a John Deere Dealer about 5 years ago. A co-worker sold it to me for $120! The tractor was sitting in a shed with four flat tires and 1 year old gas and a dead battery. My coworker moved to a new house and didn"t need it anymore and wanted it out of his shed. My coworker said the last time it ran was last summer to give kids rides at a birthday party.
I took it home and charged the battery over the weekend. Yesterday I managed to start it up. It idles good but will surge up down at the higher rpms especially under load (Mower deck engaged). Haven"t played with carb yet. Any suggestions on what could be causing this surging of rpms? As always your input is greatly appreciated.

Dirty or mis adjusted carb is making it slightly lean thus the govenor surge. Very common problem for seldom used engines.

Thanks for the reply. I will first try adjusting the air fuel mixture then. If that don't get it I will remove the carb and give it a good cleaning.

Thanks again.

For a quick verification, pull the choke out halfway. If the surging stops, it's a fuel problem. If the surging continues, consider some work on the governor and throttle levers.

Thanks for everyone that chimed in on this. Today I removed the air cleaner and adjusted the idle mixture and high speed mixture per the service manual. It ran ok for about 2 mins and then the surging returned. This time I noticed fuel spitting out of the float bowl overflow tube as the air cleaner was off. So I disassembled most of the carb right on the tractor! I removed the float needle, float, the high speed needle and low speed needle and sprayed the crap out of everything with carb cleaner. Then I blew out everything with compressed air. I reassembled the carb and Wha-la! Purrrrrrrrrfection. No more sputtering, smooth transition from idle to high speed. Smoooth! I am going to order a needle and seat, bowl gasket, air filter, and carb to manifold gasket and properly remove the carb this time. I will soak it overnight in chem dip. I am glad to see that she runs great! Best $120 I have spent in a long time.
Now if I could only find a bigger deck than the 39" deck it currently has.
