Need Help! MF 2818H (SIMPLICITY)

I just purchased a 1999 Massey Ferguson 2818H
This is a very heavily built tractor, hydraulic lift, power steering, 18 hp Kohler v-twin.
The tractor is in very nice shape. I got it home, and the steering is very sluggish when transitioning from left to right or vice versa.
Mowed 1/2 acre lawn and feel like I had a good workout! The tractor seems a bit slow too...not horrible but does not seem to be as fast in forward as reverse. Any advice/help would be appreciated!!
