I have a cub 147. Ran great last year. When I stored it last fall, I used Marine gas, 90 octane, no ethanol. I ran it dry. This year I just can"t get it to start. It will start on either. I took the carb apart and cleaned it all. Not much to it, and still can"t get it to fire. Kinda baffled.

Disconnect line at carb from fuel pump, crank eng you should get a spurt of gas out line on each eng revolution,if not problem in fuel supply, possible causes-fuel pump bad, inlet on pump plugged, fuel filter plugged, dirt in bottom of tank plugging tank outlet or shutoff valve(if tank/fuel line has)fuel lines soft/mushy due to age & pump sucking line closed.

If you get gas out of line possible carb problems-dirt/gum in inlet passage blocking passage or float needle seat,dirt/gum in internal low/hi speed passages of carb body, float needle sticking in seat, float sticking/stuck in up position.

Without knowing spec# of eng I just threw fuel pump into list of possible cause of problem, most but not all K series had fuel pump depending on how mfg speced eng when ordered from kohler or application of eng,if no fuel pump & fuel system gravity feed then pump related problems out of picture but all other possible causes of problem still apply.

1. Don't use either for testing. It tends to break rings and scuff cylinders in small engines. Use spray carb. cleaner, its much more friendly to the engine.

2. I am suspecting you have a valve clearance/carbon on the valve/stuck valve issue. It only requires 3:1 compression to fire either, about 5 or 6:1 compression is minimum for gasoline.

Make sure the sediment bowl flows free. I just had to pull mine apart and clean it because there was something plugging the inlet after the valve.

I got it to start and run just fine. Cleaned and blew out everything on and in the carb. Think I'll replace the original fuel line, and somehow lost the little spring on the main screw on the carb, and think I'll replace the bowl gasket as well.

What's a good source of parts for these? I don't think we have a cub cadet dealer for miles, which is funny since they are headquartered not 45 miles from here.

Napa is good for carb and ignition parts. That spring might be tough, visit any lawn shop and see if they have a junk carb.
