I just started poke'n around the forum recently because Im looking for an old Cockshutt, now I see theres a 'Garden Tractors Anonymous' corner also...

Hello, my name is Lance, and Im addicted to garden tractors... lol

Im near Calgary AB and have a few GTs, always working on one or the other, these days mostly on a couple early 70s Ford LGTs, have an older Ford 120, an early 70s Columbia 960, '57 Bolens Ride a Matic, about half of a '62 Cub Original, walk behind Gravely c10a and JD 30" brush cutter.

We live on an old farmstead, 3 acre yard, 11 acre pasture, reasonably easy grounds to maintain but Im looking for something older and a bit larger than a GT to restore... but smaller than my IH Hydro 86 w/fel.

Hello Lance. Nice looking Ford and Bolens you have there.

I have been thinking about your request and it seems to me that
you are going to have a tough time. Traditionally, full-size Ag
tractors are divided into Class by way of HP and type of 3 pt
hitch.

Once you get below the full-size Ag units, All you have are the
CUT's (Compact Utility Tractors) and the sub-CUT's which are
slightly smaller still but larger than a Garden Tractor.

But you are looking for an old machine and to me, that means
something from the 40's, 50's, 60's or perhaps the 70's. The
problem is , the sub-CUT and CUT Class of tractor really did not
exist in those years. However, I/H did have what they called a
Super GT. Here is a list of Cub Cadets that are called Super GT's
and it shows the make of engine.

2086 Kawasaki FD620D
2082 Kohler Mag20
2182 Kubota WG-600 gas
2084 Kohler CH20
2284 Kohler CH22

I suppose that the Deere 400 Series would qualify as a sub-CUT
and you could discuss those over on Weekend Freedom
Machines dot com.

Anything older and not made by one of the major Ag equipment
manufacturers is going to be brutally crude and not a lot of fun
to use. If it is just for restoration/show/parade duty, then it
doesn't matter. Simplex, Pond, Speedex, Shaw, Osco, IH
Farmall Cub, Massey Harris Pony, Red-E and David Bradley
Handiman all come to mind and might fit your vision.

Google is your best friend if you want to know more about those
brands.

Good Luck.

How about a Power King? My 2418 kind of fits in between a large garden tractor and a small farm tractor. They are simple and "old style" but still handy and adaptable.

Oh sry guys, I need to clarify something, I wasnt looking for suggestions on a machine, just explaining what I want to do and how I ended up at this forum. I dont actually need another mower.... when I was a young kid in the 60s my Pop ran a Cockshutt dealership and Ive decided I want to restore an old Cockshutt... and I would like to put some kind of mower on it that I can make use of occasionally, doesnt even need to be a nice finishing mower because its really nothing more than an excuse to use the tractor, I'll probably rig up a front blade for it also but again thats not something I need, just my idea for a hobby project other than garden tractors, (aswell as garden tractors is probably more accurate)

So... Im in the market for an old Cockshutt, 1940s or 50s, small tractor with a pto, and needing a little work... which is how I came across the YT forums... then, I saw the GT forum here and decided to say Hi, let ya know who I am and what Im up to, show off a couple of the little guys, I got that Bolens from an uncle back around '86 or '87, already had been modified and its even more modified now, the snowblower is actually from about a '70 Sears, its a daily driver in the winters around here, and a decided on a Ford GT about two years ago so I started to collect them, the pic is the result of blending together an LGT165 and an LGT145, and a custom made steel battery cover if anyone is interested, right now Im working on an LGT100 as well, and I have several mower decks for them, two tillers, plough, cultivator... list goes on... and as you can tell I have a tendancy to go on and on... but I enjoy forums and seeing what others are up to. Plus I work a night shift so I get home at 3am, not much else to do winding down after work. Maybe time for nightcap tho... yakatyalatr
