JD lt150/Kohler update/question

I posted on here about a month ago about my mower (Kohler 15hp) that would run for 5-10 minutes and then sputter smoke and eventually die. I got lots of input and so far have got new spark plug, no improvement. Then I cleaned and lapped the valves, they had some carbon build up. Still does the same thing. My next guess is a coil that is getting hot. I would like to hear your suggestions because I don't really know much about this. I looked online and there wasn't a coil. Is a coil the same as an ignition module? I am only calling it a coil because that's what it was on the old Farmall. Thanks for any help/suggestions you have for me.

Yes, the ignition module is the same as the coil.

That could be your problem, but it's an expensive guess if it's not. Might find a used one on Ebay.

Usually it takes longer for a coil to heat up and fail than 5 - 10 minutes, not saying it can't, just not typical. One way to test it is have a spark tester (an old spark plug with the electrode broken off) ready. Run it until it quits and immediately test for spark. If you catch it not making spark, and you know the kill wire is not grounding out, then it's the ignition module.

I would recheck the fuel system before buying an ignition module.
