Case 448 hydraulic problem

Hi,
I recently acquired an '81 Case 448 from my uncle. He said it was working good until there was a bang and a loss of hydraulics. Turns out that the lovejoy coupling had been run without a spider until it finally wore the lugs off the engine side of the coupling. I installed and entire new coupling but now I still have no hydraulics and the spider is getting so hot that it's actually melting and smoking. When I was installing the coupling I could turn the pump by hand. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
 
One side of your coupling is spinning on the shaft. That is causing the heat [friction] and it's not turning the pump as it should.

I think that Kris is right. Perhaps you forgot to install the key in one side or the other. Hopefully you did not ruin the new coupler half or the shaft itself.

Take it apart again. Clean up the shaft with emery paper (Plumber's Cloth). Use Blue Lok-Tite on the threads of the set screws. Make sure that you leave around 50 thou space between one coupler half and the spider. If the spider was damaged in any way, replace it now and save yourself the aggravation of having to do this all over again. The space is needed to allow for expansion as the parts warm up.

Let us know what you found when you dismantled it.
 
Thanks for the replies. What you are both saying makes a lot of sense. I thought I was being careful but it is quite likely that the key did fall out during reassembly. I will try to get at it this weekend and I will let you know what happens. Thanks again.
