mtd farm king has no spark

i just got an old mtd farm king (1980 ish ) . it has sat for about 10 years. i cleaned the fly wheel and the points look good . It will turn over but has no spark. could it be the coil or something else ?
Where would I find a coil ?

First thing to do if tractor has sat for 10 yrs is to remove flywheel cover & check that mice haven't built a nest in cover & chewed insulation off wire to points & plug or coil itself,if wires intact disconnet lead to coil & condenser lead from terminal on points & connect an ohmmeter/powered test light between points terminal & eng block, rotate flywheel CW slowly by hand till points close, you should get a zero ohm reading or a bright light if not points not set correctly or contacts dirty, burned or pitted and need cleaning/replacement

IF you get a reading thru points reconnect lead(s) to point terminal with the exception of ign kill lead that connects to tractor wiring harness & ign sw,also if there is any rust on flywheel magnets sand magnets clean, after that crank eng & check for spark,if you have spark now then problem in safety sw's,ign sw or wiring harness on tractor. If no spark with ign kill lead disconnected & points good then either coil bad or condenser bad,you might want to consider replaceing points/condenser & remove coil and have checked in a coil tester at local mower shop.

since points on a magneto type system carry very little current, they can look good but have an insulating film of corrosion on them. Test with the meter as told in the previous post.

Rub the points with some 320 wet or dry. Also touch those magnets with a screwdriver to see if they have strong magnetism. Hal
