I started my 8n tractor had it running for about an hour then shut it off.restarted it and ran it for about half hour. shut it off and tried to restart again and it wouldn"t start up again.it hasn"t started since then.ive been trying to start it but it sounds like its not getting a spark.it has new coil points rotor starter solenoid and alternator and new spark plugs.what could the problem be?

Sounds like it is not getting spark?

You need to test for spark and test for gas on plugs after cranking.

"it but it sounds like its not getting a spark"

LOL! You need to stop listening and get a spark tester!

Pull off one of the plug wires and hold it about 1/4" away the plug while a helper makes an attempt to start the engine. See if there's strong hot fire to your plug. Make sure your ignition switch is in the "on position". If there's no fire rub the points with a point file. Hal

When one of my herd gets stubborn, sometimes to save sometime, I hook up and have a friend pull me to start, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt

First thing check that coil polarity not reversed, the orig 6V elect system on the 8n were POS(+) chassis ground, the pos(+)terminal on coil must connect to points/condenser in distributor,in addition if you only replaced points replace condenser also, same may be bad,if everything new connect a voltmeter/test light to neg(-) terminal of coil & battery POS/chassis,turn on ign sw & check for voltage/light at coil,if no meter reading/light then follow wire back to ign sw & check for loose/broken connections, also check you're getting power thru thru sw in on position.

You mentioned you replaced alternator, orig elect system had a generator,if this tractor has a 12v elect system then a conversion has been done,do a google search for ford 8n+ wiring diagram, several posted online, see if any match your tractor wiring, the 12v system may have a ballast resistor or ballast lead feeding coil in addition starter sol may have an aux contact in same to feed coil when cranking eng as most ford 12v point type auto ign systems used this style sol,if tractor has a ballast resistor or ballast lead check each with an ohmmeter, resistor or lead may be bad or have loose connections.

Two other things to check if you haven't done so already, remove hv lead between coil & distributor cap & check with an ohmmeter, lead may be open.

Next pull distributor cap & check on inside of cap for carbon tracks/burn marks between center pin & lip of cap,hv from coil may be shorting thru tracks to distributor body & cap needs replacement.
