Deere Model 68 riding mower

FIL just bought a non-running mower pretty cheap. It has good compression, but no spark at this time. The first thing I think I will do is disconnect the keyswitch as it must just be a kill switch since it has no other electrical. It might have some other safety switch, but I am not sure at this time. Is there something else that I should do next if this doesn't work. It has a 8? horse briggs with Magnetron. Is this an old style self energizing magneto with points and condenser, or is this an electronic ignition of some sort? Thanks for the replies in advance and I will post results.

There should be a kill wire you can disconnect near the governor below the air cleaner.

If you can get the shroud off, I would check to make sure mice didn't chew thru sparkplug wire and clean out the mouse nest.

If it has points, might as well install a module to convert the coil to electronic.

Try new sparkplug as the one you are using for testing might be a dud.

Thanks rrobert.
I went out after supper and disconnected the key switch wires, and wires from a switch under the frame. I presume they prevent it from starting when the mower deck belt is engaged. I removed the wire near the governor and it bit me when I pulled it over.
Tomorrow I will get some gas in it and see if it does anything more.

Tonight I put some gas in it and gave it a couple of pulls. It didn't want to do anything, so I dribbled a little gas into the top of the carburetor. It fired up on the second pull and then died. I gave it another little sip and it started and stayed running. I ran it awhile outside to keep from finishing the fumigation of the shed. it runs good, but occasionally cuts out. I will get the deck on it and put a load on it and see if it helps clean the carb out.
By the way, there is a short in the safety switch system. Thanks for the suggestions.
