Ok so here's my problem. I have a kohler k341 AQS that I recently overhauled for a friend in a massey 1650. Engine has about 10 hours on it and runs perfectly. The problem is when he goes to start it when the engine comes up on compression the starter cant spin it on over to start it. New battery, new cables, good ground, and starter is only few months old. I then find that he had been having this problem before I overhauled it. I am thinking possibly a problem with compression release but every once in awhile it will spin over and start with no problem. So I don't know if it could be compression release or a crappy starter. Any Ideas or things I am over looking?
Thanks,Dave

Double check the valve clearance. If set too wide the CR will not work. Also be certain that the points are set correctly, that means by ignition timing. It is often the case when set by gap that they open too early and that can also stop the starter dead in its tracks.

I'll second what Butch said, check the timing with a light.

During the overhaul, did you examine the compression release mechanism on the cam?

If not, that would be the next most likely thing to check.

Pull the cam cover and make sure BOTH ends of the hairpin spring on the CR are engaged. It's tiny, look close! If they're OK,there's an unauthorized adjustment an OLD Kohler guy can make with a punch and a SMALL hammer.May the Force be with you!

There is a procedure for checking the operation of the compression release in the Kohler manual. (The old printed manual, at least- I hope it is in the electronic version on Kohlerplus.com) There is also a procedure for adjusting the release "finger" that "may" work for units built before a certain code date. I am guessing that after that code date the finger was made so hard it breaks when you attempt to bend it.

I worked on a M16 that did similar to what you describe. You could roll it over compression stroke and hit the starter and off she would go. It turned out that the oil level sensor had broken and bits of it had frozen the compression release in the released position and the finger that actually lifted the tappet had worn off.

Also, some of these K-series engines like large battery cables that are in good condition and very, very, very good ground connections near the starter. On the starter, if possible.

So it appears that it was a weak starter even though it was near new. The owner of the tractor to the starter back to the engine electric shop he bought it from and they took it in back and disassembled it, checked it out and gave it back to him, Now it spins the engine over like there's no tomorrow! Engine starts instantly. Dave
