Craftsman moving slow

My 2010 with 24 Hp and 42" deck and hydrostatic transaxle has lost power. On the slightest incline it slows to a craw no matter where the handlever is set. I've never replaced the belt. Could that be causing the problem?

If you are low on hydro oil you are lucky and a GOOD mower shop can fix. If you have a blow hydro you are scr..e..wed. Alot of mower repair places have that mini junk yard out back and can sell you a good used one. If you remove the deck and crawl under the machine you can look at the belt. Have someone slowly push the clutch pedal up and down. Ther are two idlers with the belt running through them. If the rust has made this assembly stuck it will need a squirt of oil. There is a little spring that may have broken and they don't get tight enough. Let us Know! Jeffcat

Loose or burned belt can certainly cause loss of drive power. Also there is probably a bypass valve(s) for hand rolling the tractor. If it's not fully closed it will loose drive power.

Thanks, Jeff and Steve. I'll check those items. The problem seems to have occurred since I hired a 15 yr.old boy to help with mowing. He was very careful with his driving, I commended him for that. He had mowed a half-acre when I noticed he was riding the clutch. Before he helped, the mower was operating normally. It was my fault for not cautioning him about doing that.

Another thing to check is the front transmission mount. Some of those tended to pull the self tapping bolts ouf the the front of the transmission case. Then when the wheel torque causes the transmission to twist, the belt gets slack and it slows down.

I'll have to check those things out, TOO! I was just going to ask about the same thing! Butch. How does REVERSE work on yours????

Mike,
Reverse works better than forward. When I get to a spot that is too steep for getting the mower to go forward, it backs over the same spot easily. I wonder why that happens?

I don't know, Butch, but mine's the same way. I'm going to work on mine as soon as the weather breaks. The clutch pedal is stiff on mine. Might need a little lube...
