John Deere 318 fuel shut off question

Been having an intermittent problem with the fuel flow for a long time.

To make a long story short, somehow I decided that the fuel shut off valve could be the problem. So I eliminated the valve. I attached the reserve line from the tank to a in-line filter, and the line from the carb to the other side of the filter. Then it started right up. Can see what appears to be nice flow in the filter. Runs well at idle and higher rpm's.

Question is can I just run it as is, or should I put in a new shut-off valve?

I am planning on selling this tractor.....but it's running so well and an in-line filter can't hurt.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.
