John Deere 140/316 Kohler engine

Quick question, can a 14 horse Kohler be swapped out of a 316 into a 140 without a lot of hassle and drilling? Loved the 140 till the engine gernaded. Hate the 316 that the engine needs majored in.
Thanks!

I doubt it.

What engine does the 140 have?

Most likely the 316 uses a horizontal shaft engine and the 140 uses a vertical shaft engine. You would need to reengineer the transmission and cutting belts.

I would rather have the 316 commplete than an over powered 140.

Sorry I do not know for sure, but I would think it would be a bolt in. I am sure the crank shaft is the same height. Electric clutch?? Other controls??

What do you hate about the 316? It is newer...

If the hydro control lever is very easy to move, you might consider changing the small shock absorber in the linkage. It makes a big difference on how the hydro responds. The shock makes it harder to move, but smooths out the control.

I have a 300, 316 and 318 with similar controls and they are not what I would consider jerky.

Kohler made those engines in a wide base and a narrow base version.

IIRC, both the 140 (K-321 Kohler) and the 316 (early) (K341 Kohler) used the narrow base engine, so that should be the same.

Another issue is the driveshaft area... if your 140 is over serial #30,000 the drive adapter on the flywheel will be a lot more like the 316 than if you have an older 140. I would THINK the parts would swap over, but I'm not sure.

IIRC, the PTO shaft the electric clutch fits on would be 1" in both machines.

You could always bite the bullet and repower with the Vangard 18 HP. I'm sure the H3 could use a few extra ponies. I used a very late model H1 140 for many years. The drive train was fantastic but I was never a fan of the Kohler engine. It was a gas pig and could be slightly under powered in certain situations.

When the Kohler gave up the ghost for the second time, I purchased a 318 and installed a Vangard. I couldn't be more thrilled. It is very strong, quiet and uses less fuel than the Kohler or the Onan.
