Hard starting JD 185

Have a JD 185, single cylinder Kawasaki. Very hard starting when cold (cranks and cranks), but will start and run instantly with starting fluid sprayed in the air cleaner. Starts fine after running. Can someone give me a starting point??

Take the hose off that goes to the carb from the fuel pump. See if fuel comes out when cold. I have had some that had to reprime before it would start.

One tip is "DONT" use starter fluid. If you have to give it some help, use carburetor cleaner in an a resole can.
Starter fluid causes the cylinders to have a dry start.

Install a primer that will squirt atomized fuel directly into the air stream. Most gas power snow blowers use this feature. Hal

Is the choke closing fully? Sometimes the linkage gets out of adjustment.

Have you looked at the sparkplug? If it has a grey coat on the insulator it may not be firing properly until it gets warm.

How old is the fuel? If the fuel in the tank is over 4 weeks old, it may not be vaporizing like it should, especially if ethanol is present in it.

Check the choke. I have a Kawasaki on a push mower, the choke linkage is a recurring problem, gets caked up with grass and dirt and will not close the choke.
