Changing the oil in an old Troybilt Horse tiller

Hi Guys,
I just bought an old troy built horse rototiller with the old Tecumseh engine on it (30 years old?). The wheel seals are leaking on the tiller and the gear oil is low so I'm going change it before using the tiller. I'm getting conflicting information. The manual seems to indicate that all I have to do is set the tines on the ground and fill it from the handle bar hole and it should fill the transmission case and the tiller gear case both from the one source. However, I read online that they are actually two separate reservoirs. Can anyone confirm which way it actually is?

Thanks,
Stephan

The later models (mine's a late 80's model) has two separate oil compartments. But the early models were just one compartment. The later models had attachments that bolted where the tines attached and had a square headed plug/dipstick that is at the front of the tine hood. chris

The later PTO tillers had two oil reservoirs. They take very little oil in the reservoir on the pto. To add oil to large gear box you need to remove the handle. There's an oil level pipe plug on the left side inside the left wheel for checking the oil level. If oil drips don't add any oil. Hal

Thanks guys, that explains why I can't find the second plug. I must have one of the older horse tillers.

The pto model tillers had a lever for engaging and disengaging the tines. It's installed on top of the transmission. Hal
