Troybilt tiller update

I have a troybilt tiller with a 7hp kohler that belonged to my cousin. I tried starting 3 years ago and it only ran on either. I soaked the carb. Numerous times, ran wire through it and finally got it running last night after 15 years

My first Horse model tiller had that engine in 1978. I think I paid $600.00. Never had any problems with those Kohler engines. I bought the black tiller that came out in 1991. I sold the 7hp for more than I paid for it. Some guy saw the black tiller and wanted to know what I wanted for it. I think I added $400.00 on top of what I paid he pulled a wad of money from his pocket and took it. I paid $100.00 for this tiller in 2006. It needed a lot of work such as new seals under the tine holders, tines and I sold the 6 hp Tecumseh engine for $65.00. I bought a 10hp replacement engine from small engine warehouse with electric start. Hal

Dad bought a brand new Koehler 7hp in 1979, that engine lasted until 1997 when it slung a rod. Bought a repl Briggs from troybilt for $600 and run it every year. Been through 4 sets of tines

I didn't have battery start when I took that picture back in 2006. As I'm in my 80's I decided to install a battery. I installed a flat battery box and a garden tractor battery. I never wired it to charge the battery. I have a + cable connected to the starter and I just touch the ground cable to ground when making a start. I use a bungie cord to secure the battery. One charge usually lasts all year. I pull the battery when I'm finished for the season and keep it in my basement. Hal

Good Morning Hal

Hal I really glad that you are able to get around ay 80 years to plow , plant a garden .
I will be 75 this year so you have me by a few years .
Like they say work smarter not harder .
What year is your Garden tractor ? does it have the two speed gear box along with the 5 speed transmission?

I bought the tractor new in 1971. It has hydrostatic drive and hydraulic lift for the implements. The plow is off an old Viking G walk behind tractor I bought for $15.00 in 1960.
I kept the plow when I sold the Viking.

I had to make this frame to mount the plow on the sleeve hitch. It was a copy of the handles and drawbar off the Viking. Hal
PS: I painted the tractor and plow in 2010.

My Horse had the 7 hp Kohler,it was a good easy starting old engine but it seemed like I was always messing with the carb. I ran it out of oil and it threw a rod so I replaced it with a Predator engine from Harbor freight. It cost about $100 delivered, unbelievable. It was a direct replacement. It starts with one pull and just hums. It is a little lighter so it makes the Horse easier to horse around. One drawback is it wont work sidehill unless the oil is overfilled, the low oil sensor shuts off.
