I"m chasing gremlins I think! Went to start it and it turned over about 1/2 a turn and stopped like it blew a fuse. I checked the fuse and it checks ok, then checked the safety switches, they ok. Bench tested the starter-no life so, new starter. Put it on - still nothing. Have 12 V to the starter, but only .75 V to the switch wire at the starter. Jumped across the terminals at the starter, nothing-or a small spark but wont turn over. I have enough power to start the hour meter and the electric clutch most times but it got me stumped. Checked the grounds and they seem ok. I know its something simple, but I cannot find it. Any one found a trick to what I"m doing wrong?

Measure the battery voltage while cranking to see how far it drops. You can use an hydrometer and measure the specific gravity in each battery cell and record the readings. 1.280 on a fully charged battery. The readings should be close to one another. Hal

If all battery cable connections clean/tight at both ends the more that likely cause is a weak/bad battery, check battery with a hydrometer or remove & have load checked.

IF you have a voltmeter/12v test light connect across battery, try to start tractor,if battery voltage less that 11v or light gets dim/goes out the battery needs a charge or replacement.

There may not be anything wrong with your old starter. I use a full size car battery Group 75 from Walmart in my garden tractor. Hal

Check the voltage at the big terminal (not the wire) on the starter to the battery ground POST (again, not the wire) while trying to crank it. Weak connections can give voltage readings but loose then when load is applied and that sounds to me like what you have. if it drops to 0 under an applied load take your jumper cables or a heavy jumper wire and run it from the battery ground terminal to the starter case and try it. If still nothing try same from positive to the starter.

Take the spark plug out. See if it turns over.
It could be hydro-locked, with gas. My Snapper
rear engine rider, 11 HP Briggs, has the float
sticking open. It often locks up like that when
it sits. I finally put a gas shut off valve in
the line, easier than taking the carb apart.
Yes ! I still forget to shut the gas off some-
times !
