I have a JD 400 that was running fine until I tried to start it yesterday after it set for few days. The engine started but wouldn't smooth out buy manipulating the throttle and choke, It stopped and I tried to restart. The started sounded like it was grinding and didn't seem to really turning over the engine. Next try nothing. Next try more grinding but it seemed like the engine or something was causing resistance or stuck. How can I determine what happened. Apparently,to even assess the starter the engine must the un-bolted from the frame and raised.

Really dread having to go to JD Dealer without taking out a bank loan.

AS Toro said, see if it's locked up. Once sparkplugs are out it should be fairly easy to turn over buy the crankshaft PTO pulley behind the grille.

Something to check... "crosses" in the engine-to-hydro driveshafts are known to wear out/fall apart/trash themselves. Something MAY have fallen apart there.

If the engine is free and he driveshaft is OK, pulling the engine to get at the starter is NOT as bad as you may think.

Just LOTS of little details!

I think the "crosses" refers to the U joints between engine and driveshaft. It is probably a piece of rubber that allows flexing between engine and shaft.

I would turn the engine backwards first. The starter gear might be jammed onto the ring gear. If it is a Kohler engine, the starter gear is designed to slip and might make the sound you are referring to.
