Kawasaki No Spark

I have a john deere with a Kawasaki 17hp. It has no spark, can I unhook the wires going into the engine like on a briggs and check for spark. I tried this and no spark. Or could this be a safety kill causing this? Thanks for any help. kevin

Yes, you can disconnect the chassis harness to test for spark.
If its the old single cylinder Kaw., your problem is probably the trigger module. The shiny little metal box bolted to the side of the engine.

Just had the exact same problem on a 265, it was the spark module on the side. the screw was just loose on mine and it wasn"t getting good ground, tightened it up and it started right up.
