I need to remove the crankshaft on my Gravely 424 to have it ground. How do I remove the gears on the PTO side?

Bret, I want to believe you but sure don't see a key way (similiar to the flywheel end of the shaft). I took a picture but don't know how to include it in the reply.

Here are the instructions for posting picture using the Advanced Posting Tools. You also need the pictures on My Documents or Pictures since APT will take you there when click on " Browse". Hal

What engine? The best thing to do is find a diagram of the engine.

Maybe wait for a reply from someone that does know what the engine looks like inside before trying anything below.

I think you are right. Those do look pressed on. There might be a C clip inside the engine. Those gears might be a seperate shaft from the crankshaft similar to a camshaft.

I am not sure what that engine looks like inside. I would pull the 4 bolts on that plate and see what is on the other side. Don't be too rough with it, I don't want you to break anything expensive!

The gears are put on HOT, and then when they cool they lock into position. A good puller usually can pull them off, but you may have to heat them with a torch if they are stubborn. don"t heat the shaft, just the gears.

Depending on its age, it might be a 2 piece gear, or a single gear. I"d use a bearing puller or something behind the gears so your puller jaws aren"t pulling on the gear teeth (they break).

IF you go here, you will find gravely manuals that will show you how to do all this stuff.

I think I"ll have to take it to somebody who has removed the two gears before. You warned about breaking EXPENSIVE things and I may be money ahead having this done. I tried just the puller then added some heat and nothing happened. Probably just too timid with both torch and pressure on puller.

I"m not sure how they did it but the shop got them off. Nothing was warm so no heat was used. There is a woodruff key used for each gear. There is no external indication of the keyways.
