1996 murray 4637x68a drive belt problem

I recently replaced the trans/axle pulley and put a new drive belt on this unit, also replaced clutch idler spring. every time I go to reverse or push the tractor bsckwards when not running the belt comes off the trans axle pulley. Anyone got an Idea why?

Yo probably got sumthing oat of aliment, or failed to put all the belt guides in place.
Vhy did you have to replace the pulley?

Check that belt guide on rear side of trans pulley not bent/loose allowing belt to slip up/down between guide & pulley or that guide not missing, after that check for worn/sloppy bearing in idler pulley & a loose bolt or worn bolt hole that anchors idler pulley arm.

Also you're probably missing a number between 7 and X in mod#.

What Joe said. Also, You did install the new transmission pulley right side up, didn't you? You can check if you still have your old pulley, they usually rust more on the top.

You did get an OEM belt for that drive, didn't you? Murray was fond of using V belts with extra deep cross section-deeper than a standard V-belt in some applications, especially the deck belts.

lastly, Murray used a lot of long bolts placed close to pulleys for belt guides. Sometimes these have to be loosened and swung to the side to put on a belt.

I have also seen places where the wrong side of the belt was routed around the idler pulley.

If yours is the model with the shifter in the fender, also check that the shifter linkage is not interfering with the belt, as I am thinking the shifter linkage had to be disconnected when replacing the belt.

If you need an assembly drawing/parts list for tractor goto link below & look at the motion drive parts list for the mod's 46378X6 or 46378X62A tractors in the murray lawn/garden tractors listings.

There are actually 3 guide pins(#1) for belt located around trans pulley,I missed this looking at drawing quickly the 1st time, check that all 3 pins are present and straight/tight
