Gravely 424 Crankshaft

The crank is scored badly and needs to be replaced. Is this crank Graely specific or are there different Kohler K241 style cranks? I have a crank out of another K241 motor but it is different size (larger diameter) on the end that goes into the transmission.

Kohler made a bunch of different crankshafts for their engines. Get the Spec # off of your engine and it'll tell you the particulars on your crank. Find a parts manual and you can cross or look for what spec#s used the same crank.

Someone removed the Kohler placard but the Gravely one is still there. Mode; G 24 E
Ser. C189295 Spec. 46422D.

According to small eng warehouse website your eng has a stepped crank & gravely is only tractor that uses this type crank on a K241,try going to ebay & search gravely crankshaft, you might get lucky & find a good used crank OR goto link below & look in the kohler K241 eng listings for your spec# eng & find out what undersize rods are avail for your eng, then take crank to a machine shop & have them measure crank journal to see if they can grind/polish crank for avail undersize rod(s)

Any good machine shop can spray-weld up the crank and regrind it to spec - whatever spec you desire. Do yourself a favor while you are in there and have them machine space for a bearing insert. That will make your engine nearly bulletproof. I"ve had several done that way over the years. Also, if you have balance gears in that engine take them out and throw them away. Many K series Kohlers have been ruined because the balance gears grenade and destroy the block.

Another thought: I am thinking that .010 connecting rods are still available for most K-series Kohlers.

A local machine shop might be able to just grind the crank undersize for a new rod. Yes, I know a rod is probably over $100.

I got Carolina Crankshaft in Charlotte, NC to both straighten and grind .010 a K241 crank for me about 6 years ago. I thought they were very reasonable on price.

Thanks everyone for all the good advice. Now to pony up the $ to get the old girl back to plowing snow in MIchigan next winter.

I've located a fairly local machine shop to turn the crank. So now am wondering how to get the gears off the power take end of the shaft. My Chilton's manual doesn't address this. Are they pressed on?
