hello all, i have a huffy or i have also heard them called huffman, lawn mower, i believe from tractordata.com it is a model 1054, it is 8 hp with i believe a 26 inch deck. i have had it for the past 4 years, but it has not run in the last two as the ignigtion system wore out and i have not yet converted it to electronic ignition. i was wondering if anyone could tell me about it, i plan to fix it this summer and additionally put an hour meter on it for maintnence.

i googled it and came up with a newspaper telling about a recall for a faulty blade shutoff switch, i dont think my blade shuts off all the way, can anyone tell me about that?

The easiest way to fix your ignition problem, is to upgrade to a modern electronic ignition coil (magneto).

Briggs made tens of thousands of engines that used the coil I"ve mentioned. So, used ones are a dime a dozen. Or you can pick up a new one from any B&S dealer or eBay.

I have 2 Huffys. a 4 hp. Ranchero from about 1964 and a later 5 hp.

The Ranchero is somewhat modified, when I restored it (It one time was stripped and the frame used for a trailer)I added a differential and larger wheels from a somewhat larger Huffy. I also removed the blade and blade clutch as I mainly rode it around at shows for a while.

All I know about the company is what I read on the serial number tag, It is on the chain cover on mine, I hope it is still on yours. The same company also made mowers for other companies, like the 'box stores' at the time and put their name on them.

I also converted my 4 hp. to electronic ignition when I painted it. It was a chore to remove so much sheet metal just to clean the points. I haven't done much to my 5 hp., although I did do enough when I got it to hear it run once.

i havent really looked closely at it for a long while, but where abouts is the chain cover where the tag would be? how did you go about repainting it? and is there any place out there that could duplicate the decals? mine has almost perfect paint except for the top of the hood where it is rusty, no doubt from spilling gas on it by previous owners. and finally, do you know of any way to clean the yellowed plastic that is on the gas cap? mine has that neat little float style fuel gauge but you really cant read it becuase it is so yellowed
