Looking at a Sears 10/6 (late 70's I presume). It seems to be
well kept and hasn't been fiddled with. It runs but haven't seen
it in person to know if it is smoking or anything. Original Briggs
engine. They have the mower deck, the plow, and some kind
of blade. They are wanting $150 for it. I only need it for the
plow - as I get older running the tiller gets harder and harder. I
probably won't even keep the mower deck on it but it may be
nice to have. What do I need to look out for?

Sounds like you may be referring to a Suburban 10 with the hi/low range transmission. If that be the case, I would buy it in a heartbeat, whether it smokes or not. Those were some of the best little garden tractors ever! I had a Suburban 12 and did add antifreeze to the rear tires and chains, put about 50lbs of weight on the front end and she would pull the plow just fine! They had a little cultivator that did a pretty good job too.

They are good tractors its not a Suburban, but as you posted a 10/6 meaning it has a 10 hp B&S with the Roper 6 speed transaxle 3 forward 1 reverse with hi/lo range, It will pull a plow just fine they are also good for tilling either with a pull behind or a 3 pt low/low just creeps along. Just check the usual things does engine start and idle and run without smoking try driving it to check the trans for shifting etc.

I bought mine new in 1978, used for mowing & snow blowing for the past 36 yrs. Also have grasshopper with snow blowing that is doing the bulk of work now. Have used the plow and 8 HP tiller on the 3 pt hitch. Solid & has the garden frame, not the lighter lawn frame. Chains are a must for blowing and plowing.
