Briggs L-head cylinder head bolts- $3.00 ea? Yow!

Hi, All,

rebuilding a 100292-0536 off my dads rototiller. After 40 years the cylinder head studs were soft as butter.

The part is a 691640 and its cousin, 691659. They are $3-4 ea at the briggs site and similar elsewhere.

I haven't done a small rebuild before.... is that really the going rate?

thanks!

Bill

Afraid so. I work in the small engine field. Even a regular SAE nut is 500% to 1000% higher when bought as an engine 'part' than if it comes from the hardware store.

Goto home depot, lowes, ace hardware, auto parts store or an old fashion hardware store(if you can still find one)and look in the pull out draws of specialty hardware/fastners,check if they have grade 8 bolts in the diam x length and pitch needed & check price, probably much less than briggs,I've been useing grade 8 for yrs when replacing head bolts,I've also used grade 5 if I couldn't find grade 8,but I prefer the 8's.

I always clean out the female threads, in the
block, with a tap, and just purchase the correct
size grade 8 bolt from a farm store.

Foe what its worth Parts Tree parts tree.com show 691640 for $2.73 and 691659 for $2.80 . Still high and don't know how their shipping charges go. Phone 877-798-7278.

If you have a FASTENALL near you they have good availibilty of hardened and specialty bolts.

My experience with Fastenal is that they would charge $4.87 ea and want an added charge if you don't take a full box.
