RE: 318 starter revisited

There is no "thimble" dust cover on the end of the Bendix and none available thru Deere.

Again, the Bendix is sticking in the retracted, not engaged with the flywheel, position. How is a cover going to help that? Appears Bendix has interference with shoulder on the shaft when retracted (bright spot on shaft).

Any lube recommendations for the Bendix spiral threads?

Thanks for previous replies to post!

the plastic/rubber thimble is there to
keep sand/ debris from getting between
the drive and the armature shaft. ( not the screw )
if it were mine i would remove the starter
and disassemble the drive end.
i do stock the drive and the end frame kit.
thank you. boomer ( the used onan engine parts guy )

Does the starter spin up real fast/instantly when you try to crank the engine?

They are called an "inertial" starter drive and if the starter doesn"t quickly snap up to speed, the won"t spin out and engage the flywheel.

What's that kit, $80 to $100 now?

I wonder if the plastic "thimbles" are the same as on a Kohler KT17 starter?

If they are, I have several intact used ones, and I would be happy to send one to the OP, if it would fit and help him out.

that kit is about 1/10 of your LOW price.
yours may be the same, BUT when they get
old they usually break when you remove them.
thank you. boomer
