JD 214 condenser question

My 1986 JD 214 I purchased in July, 2013 runs fine and is dependable. I noticed the condenser on it was about 1/2 inch in diameter or so versus a new Kohler condenser which appears to be a 5/8 inch in diameter or so like my other JD 214's. I've never seen a condenser as small as this one. Just curious, what type of condenser is it and whom was it made by? I'll be installing new Kohler points & condenser, spark plug, oil change, etc. for a preseason tuneup. Any assistance is appreciated.
 
It is unlikely that anyone can tell you to a certainty who manufactured condensers for Kohler. Engine companies often source product from more than one supplier. I also think it fair to say that different companies in the condenser business will come up with their own designs that employ differences in the materials selected. All that matters is whether the end product has the correct micro-farad rating needed to suppress the spark that causes points to burn out quickly.

I can understand your curiosity but in my mind, it is really a non-issue.
 
You'd be better off going to NAPA and looking for a NOS Delco, Niehoff, or Motorcraft condenser. The newer Kohler branded is not likely to be as good. Or, try the Kirk Engines Pointsaver for a permanent solution.
 
My advice is to not mess with it until it gives trouble, such as burning points or some such.

I was told that the likelihood of getting a bad condenser at the store was much higher than the likelihood of a good condenser ever going bad.

In my short 10 year career as a small engine technician, I can only remember one engine that responded to the installation of only a good condenser.
 
Thanks everyone for your replies-I appreciate it. As long as it runs fine I'll leave it alone. I do have brand new Kohler points and condenser available if it's needed.
