spark plug hole stripped

What engine is it?

If it is a flat head like a 6hp Briggs & stratton, then just replace the head and gasket.

If it is an overhead valve, search for sparkplug repairs.

From another site:
"for the do-it-yourself guy. Go to the local auto parts and you can buy a spark plug thread kit. There are two types available. One is a Helicoil and the other is a threaded bushing. A helicoil is recommended for the first repair because its the least invasive procedure. Tap the hole with the supplied tap and install the helicoil. The threaded busing works the same way but makes the hole bigger for the busing. Not hard to do for the novice.

What engine do you have?

I might have a few parts engines if you can't find something cheap on Ebay. But everything is under snow at the moment!!

10 h p briggs.

i will try to find something locally. a friend has some parts. maybe if i pull the head, i can retap.

Very simple repair job that most any body can do. Pull the head off. Take it to a good auto parts store and buy a Heli coli kit and install said kit and buy a head gasket and install head back on

The last one that I had that stripped out I bought a metric sparnext size up and and checked spark plug cross references to find a comparable heat range for the H10 that stripped the threads out. Drilled and tap the hole and put in a new plug This was a Kohler engine. You have to remove the head . If my comkputer hadn't died yesterday I could find the cross reference chart for you

I have done many by using air compressors blow gun in the muffler and drilling and taping for the heli coil without removing head. Never had an issue. Good eye protection essential. Good luck

I would recommend going with the threaded bushing repair. Once installed according to instructions, it is a long term repair.
Heli-coil will work, but may thread out with the plug when you remove the plug some time down the road. Also wonder if Heli-coil is airtight. May leak some of the combustion gases.

That is not true provided a Helicoil is installed properly it will not come out. I've had and have a head with the bushing laying in my shop and it came out with the plug. The helicoil is one of very few thread inserts that approved for aircraft use.

One of the big drawbacks with Heli-coil is the tab that you install it with has to be broken off. Makes it inappropriate for most spark plug repairs. In this case, especially with the head off, it should work OK.
OTOH - AutoZone sells a kit with 3 sizes of inserts, a tap, and a staking tool for about $30 as I recall. Those inserts look fairly permanent. I put one into a Ford 4.6 a year or so ago, and it is still holding. Tried another in a 5.4, and it lasted a week. Didn't feel righ tgoing in, and sure enough, it failed.

Yes there is a tab to break of not a big deal you can use a small needle nose into the threads grasp the tab give it a slight twist and it will come right out, or you can use a small mechanical fingers. As I said if done properly they are permanent just about all aircraft piston engine use helicoils for threads I've been dealing and using helicoils for over 40 yrs in aircraft applications and small engine.

I had a helicoil installed by our local auto machine shop for $10.00. It was for a 14mm plug.
