have a snapper hydrostat. good notor, prettty good tires. hydrostat is not working. would it be economical for me to repair it myself? seems to be quite a project.

maybe find a used one.

Won't know till you get in there and find the problem...

But do look for the obvious first, slipping belt, sheared key, loose linkage, low oil, etc.

Also, most hydrostats have an unloader valve so it can be rolled around when not under power. Be sure it is in the proper position.

I agree with Steve but would like to add the following.

Examine the hydro trans-axle and see if there is still an ID tag on it. If you find it, then record all the information. Then Google the manufacturers name to come up with their website. You can probably enter in the model number and that will take you to the exploded parts diagram.

It may even provide an operator"s manual but if not, you can contact the manufacturer for help.

Make sure that the pulley on the hydro is secured to the input shaft and not just spinning around on it.

A small leak can drop the oil level to the point where the hydro cannot function. The parts manual should help in locating the drain and fill plugs.
