JD 214 starter question

The starter on my recently purchased 1986 JD 214 cranks the engine over just fast enough to start the engine. Starter does not pause or hesitate when cranking. Battery and cables are new. It doesn't crank the engine as fast or doesn't have the "zip" like my two other 214 tractors. Looking at JD parts I see there is service kit with end cap and brushes. Would this be a logical solution? I will be removing and have it tested. Has anyone serviced a starter of this kind? Any assistance is always appreciated.

Let us add your question and the first reply. If you have a Kohler engine MY starter had one of the springs that apply pressure to the brush missing from the factory! Repaired it and now works just dandy. You have four brushes on a magnet type starter and when one ain't working you now have half a starter. It will work but is weak as you say. The release will give the engine a big Uhhh..every other revolution.Let us know. Jeffcat

Just want to add: I have limited experience on JD, but those same engines on Wheel Horse frames sometimes respond well to having an additional battery ground cable added that connects to either the starter frame or as near the starter as possible on the engine itself.

Aoparrently, on Wheelhorse at least, the bolt-together connections in the chassis between the ground cable and the starter itself reduce the current avaiable to turn the starter.
