I recently posted a question about my smoking 420 JD mower. I got only one answer but I did find out that a new B&S vanguard is the way to go if your going to replace and repower. The cost is anywhere from $1400 and DIY to $2000. I found a Amish guy that has a small engine repair shop and has a good reputation that will fix what ever needs fixing but a rering and valve job will cost me $350. I really dont look for anything else to be wrong but he will check.

Rering and valves for only $350? That is a deal. Best I can remember it is about 10 hrs. work.

At $60/hr x 10 = $600.

The guy has a good reputation for being honest,I am hoping for the best. He will check everything and replace anything that needs fixen. The Amish do seem to work cheaper

bspauld would you happen to have "the amish guy" address ? I also live in michigan and am in need of a honest small engine rebuilder. I have a 318 and a 420 that were neglected before I bought them. [bad maintenance] I use them to harvest logs and fire wood, out of my woods.
