John Deere 400 K532 20hp with rod knocking

Hello Guys, I can't say that I am in love with my old 400, but there is no way that I want to part with it. I am looking for any and all advise on what to do. Should I rebuild my old engine, do a repower, and if I were to do a repower which engines would you all recommend?

Trouble is "good prices" still = darned near two grand, with shipping.

I have the same situation with a 400, and am wondering what to do, as well.

Think I'd start with a teardown and see what's salvageable. Lots of good used parts on Ebay.

Unless it's really trashed, this would be your most economical route, and keep it original!

Steve, That was the plan, but a friend of mine who was helping me dismantle the engine put a severe ding on the crankshaft. The machine shop that I use said they could fix it but it would be cheaper to find another one plus they wouldn't guarantee the work. And another crankshaft would just add to my overall costs. Jack

Those were some of the best engines Kohler ever built, personally I'd try to fix the engine or look for a used one.Although they are an older engine there are some good ones still around I bought one off an Airplane deicer last year that only had about 150 hrs on it.That engine is around 35 years old no way you'll buy a new one now that'll come close to giving that kind of service.

You may be better off to buy a short block. I did that on a JD 140 tractor. You would need the spec number. It cost $300.00 back then in 1981. Hal

smallenginesforless has a new kohler mini-block for $899 plus $50 shipping on ebay. 2 available. looks like exactly what you need
