need pistons

just throwing it out there need a source of 4 flat top pistons 2 1/4" across any snowmobiles , garden tractors , motorcycles use them .. friend is looking for them ,, he can have them made , but very costly as they no longer build the car he needs them for .

I wonder if your friend realizes that the bore size is only one aspect of piston design. Wrist pin diameter, wrist pin location, skirt design, number of piston rings, placement of the rings, thickness of the rings are just a few of the other factors. Oh.. I shouldn't forget the weight of the pistons because they make up a part of the reciprocating mass that needs to be counterbalanced. Lastly, pistons come in STND and several oversizes that are measured in thousands of an inch.

On the other side of the coin, if your friend has done his research and found that his engine uses the identical piston to those used on other brands of engines, then that would be a different story. However, if that was the case, then I doubt very much that he would be having a problem finding replacements.

On the face of it, I think that your friend is going to have to arrange for the pistons he needs to be custom manufactured if he expects to have a properly running engine.

Have him get a hold of a Hemmings motor news, they have hundreds or thousands of people schlepping pistons each month. Someone may very well have a set of NOS pistons on the shelf for his very application or will know what fits and what doesn't as well as the possibility of getting a used set

I don"t know much about it , other than he said it didn't matter as he expects the wrist pins to be larger, but intended in bushing them .. as far as the skirt he could shorten if needed .. the car wouldn't be legal for on the road by today"s standards .. wants it to run in parades only.
It is an old Bantam that was made in butler pa.

He does know a piston out of a Crosly is too large .
he found one company wants 600.00 per piston.

Roy, I don't know where your friend contacted, and I am not asking here, but he might try EGGE Machine Company. They make a lot of pistons for older engines.
To be honest, I would seriously consider installing a small 4cyl. engine from a later model vehicle, such as the 2300cc. engine from a mustang or pinto. Find one from a carbureted version and it just might be do-able. A few years ago, I delivered a load of gravel to a co-workers house and while waiting for him to get home, was talking with his FIL next door. He had a Model A sitting under the carport. I kept looking at it and thinking, something's different. Then, it hit me, the rear axle was different! He had taken the engine, trans, and rear end out of a Pinto or Mustang and installed it in the A. You could not tell it from outside the car!

Several of the older Briggs & Stratton cast-iron engines had a 2-1/4" bore. ....All would have had flat-top pistons.

B&S engines with 2-1/4" bore were: Model 8, Model 9, model A, models F, FE, FG, FH, FJ, H, L, M, S,& T.

Most of the pistons for these models were obsoleted many years ago, but the pistons for the model 8 and model 9 may still be found, as they are the latest of the models listed.

The Model 8 piston had a wrist pin bore of .491", and used a .489" diameter pin.

The Model 9 & the Model A piston had a wrist pin bore of .563", and used a .561" diameter pin.

Old Roy,
We could help if we had the pin dia. and comp. height. With the bore, pin dia & measurement from top of pin to top of piston, piston length. is all we need.
