Re: Electric PTO clutch

Mine did that for a bit before it failed altogether. I found a brand new replacement on ebay pretty reasonable and installation was really simple.

On my JD 111 I use the highest amp lawn tractor battery that will fit the battery holder.
This helped my clutch work correctly. I do have the correct air gap.

More likely than not, your old battery was well on the way out and was causing the alternator to divert most of its power to recharging. Electric clutches....when new....draw a specific amount of amperage. As they age, the amount of draw often increases as the insulation on the copper used to wind the coil begins to break down, allowing internal shorting to take place.

Using a battery with a higher CCA rating might help on a short term basis but that won't fix the real problem.... which is a failing clutch. This is NOT to suggest that your clutch was failing but rather that your old battery was no longer up to snuff. Since you apparently never subjected it to testing, we will never know one way or the other.

It sure could have been a failing battery. This started 12-15 years ago and first I adjusted the air gap and that worked but still occasionally when hot it did not engage. So when I replaced the battery I went with higher amp and that has worked so far. Still has original PTO clutch but I imagine my day is coming.

i take from what you said in the posting it's a JD tractor. i had a problem with the same thing on a 318 started checking changing and beating thimgs nothing helped until, i found a bundle of grounding wires under the battery box. took it apart and cleaned and retighten it works fine. onwer said it was like like for years run then not restart till cool
