30 weight oil

I don't.

Detergent keeps the inside of the engine CLEAN. It prevent buildup of varnish and particulate on the oil pan and block. This is important because oil is part of the cooling system. It picks up heat and transfers that heat to the pan and sides of the block that are exposed to the outside air.

Allowing varnish and sludge to interfere with the transfer of the heat is not a wise move. Change the oil every 25 hours of use or even more often. Oil is not expensive and small engines normally require less than 2 quarts. I am not aware of any engine manufacturer that recommends non-detergent oil for their splash lubed engines.

The only advantage of non detergent oil is it doesn't cause as much carbon deposit build up in the combustion chamber. Not a real concern in a healthy engine.

About the only real application for it, that I can think of, is in reciprocating compressors. Even that has been superseded with better quality synthetic oil by most manufactures.

Haven't used 30 weight non detergent oil since the mid 60's and mid 80's went from 30 weight detergent oil to 15-40 milti grade oil which I still use today in all small engines today.

One thing about 30 wt. oils. Automotive oils no longer have zinc in them. Catalytic converters don't like it.

Kohler and Kawasaki both recommend their own brand oil for their engines because it is still formulated with zinc. The zinc helps the oil stick to the parts to reduce dry startups.

The only reason I can think of to use non-det oil would be in an old gunked up engine where the detergent will break loose all kinds of crap at once and you can end up with an oil burner from it. Otherwise detergent because that's what the Mfgs say to run in them.
