JD M655 ZT Mower Steering

Hi,

I have a JD M655 commercial ZT mower that I am working on and both of the steering shock dampers are gone and no longer work. The part number is Suspa c16-18498 which I have found, but found out after some research that it is a discontinued size and a special order costing about $100 a piece..a bit much in my mind... Having measured the compressed length and extended length to be about 6.5" compressed and 9.5" extended, I wondered about getting another aftermarket one, however I don"t know what the pound rating of the damper is and don"t want to venture a guess and order and be wrong. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Thanks in advance.

I Googled that model and it looks like the model Deere that has the same rear frame as an older 500 series Toro. Horizontal crank Kohler driving the pumps under the seat with a multigroove belt. Basically the same engine plate as the Toro from just under the seat on back to the rear. I would check their dampers out.

The good thing is that the damper only provides some resistance to handle movement, to both keep the mower from jerking and to keep from damaging the pump.(Quick movement of the control handle causes the rotor in the pump to blow/jump off of the wear plate which in turn causes the case pressure to rise and possbly blowing one of the case seals.)

It probably would not have to be the exact damper to improve operation.

Thanks. After doing a little looking into your suggestion, I did find some. On ebay they have a pair of them for $55 with the same specs as what mine are. Half of what Deere wants for them...surprise, surprise.

Thanks again for the assistance.
