Jim Dandy/Economy vs. Power King

Is Jim Dandy and Power King the same thing? I'm looking at a 1970's Jim Dandy Economy tractor w/14hp Kohler, S/N 32,???. Do these have any serious flaws or faults? Any info on the tractor or parts for it would be much appreciated.

They all were Economy in the beginning. Jim Dandy and Power King came along to denote the model size. Jim Dandy was the smaller tractor in the line. All were equally tough. Jim Dandy's have 8" front wheels while the Power King had 12" fronts. Later JDs had 12" fronts and 14hp engines. The one you are looking at MAY have a replacement engine. I'm not clear on when they became 14hp instead of 12. Email me and I can give you a list of good parts sources for these tractors. They are tough, rugged and work beyond their size. The only thing I would classify as a serious fault would be changing the hydraulic belt or clutch. It can be a little involved but, once it's done, you're normally good for another 25 years.

I don't know a lot about these but I think they are the same. A friend bought one about a year ago but hasn't used it any. He bought it for collector purposes. They are a very sturdy built machine. I think they used the transmission and rear end out of a Ford Falcon, or his is anyway. I think that they went out of business sometime in the seventies.

If it's an older Economy (40s or early 50s) then it does have a Ford rear end. The transmissions were the same up into the mid 80s when they went to a fiberglass body. The trannys they used from the 40s to the 80s was a Crosely T92 three speed transmission. You can actually still get these but they ain't cheap. They never used a Ford tranny. Engineered Products went out of business in 1996 after being bought and sold several times.

It seems to be in real good shape. I haven't heard it run yet, but I will tomorrow. Does $800 sound fair? It comes with a mower deck.

Can anyone tell me what year it is? The S/N is 32,???. Thanks.

The 32... serial number puts the year of manufacture at 1974. $800 is fair depending on what else the tractor has on it. For instance, if it has dual transmissions and hydraulic lift, then it's definetly worth $800. If it's a manual lift and single transmission, then it probably still is worth the price but it gives you room to bargain a little. Three point hitch is another plus. Then you must consider the general overall condition and how it runs. These things price funny and are very territorial.

Well, I'm now the proud owner of an Economy tractor! $800 w/mower deck brought it home yesterday. It's S/N 32,438. It has no hydraulics, 3 pt., dual transmissions, etc, but it runs and mows real good. Is there some sort of a official website for the Jim Dandy tractors? Thanks.
